About Dr. Ben Yap

Leadership Is deeply human

Leadership often asks us to make decisions without a clear answer—balancing competing priorities, navigating relationships, and acting on incomplete information. Throughout my career, I have returned to one question: What enables leaders to navigate complexity, challenge, and change effectively? That question has shaped my work as an executive leader, researcher, mentor, writer, and speaker. It is also what led me to establish The Leader’s Wheelhouse.

For more than twenty years, my leadership journey has taken me across four continents. Working alongside people from different cultural and organizational backgrounds has challenged my assumptions, broadened my perspective, and deepened my appreciation for the context in which leadership happens.

My experience has grown from early leadership responsibilities through senior and chief executive roles. Along the way, I have led and contributed to strategy, organizational development, culture, governance, leadership development, and significant organizational change.

These experiences have allowed me to practise leadership while also studying it closely: reflecting on my own decisions, learning from other leaders, and observing what builds trust and strengthens an organization—and what can quietly undermine both.

Successes and difficult decisions alike have convinced me that leadership cannot be reduced to techniques or formulas. It requires sound judgement, courage, humility, and a willingness to keep learning.

Ben’s Experience

Shaped by people and place.

Curiosity led me to complete a Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership, where my research explored the relationship between cultural intelligence and work engagement.

I continue to explore how leadership, culture, trust, engagement, and team effectiveness shape the experience of people within organizations.

Research matters to me because it helps us look beneath the surface. It challenges assumptions, prompts better questions, and provides a more informed basis for deciding how to respond. I bring that same curiosity to the leaders and organizations I work with.

Ben’s Research

Research that informs practice.

I founded The Leader’s Wheelhouse to bring practical leadership experience, research, and thoughtful conversation together.

I wanted to create space for leaders not only to develop their capabilities, but also to reflect honestly, find encouragement, and renew their sense of direction.

My aim is not to prescribe a single model of who a leader should become. It is to help people understand what they bring, develop with intention, and strengthen leadership in others.

Whether I am mentoring a leader, working with an executive team, or facilitating a retreat, that purpose remains the same.

Ben’s “Why”

Why Leadership Wheelhouse?

Beyond my work

I am a husband, father, and lifelong learner. My understanding of leadership is grounded in humility, service, wisdom, integrity, and the inherent value of every person. I continue to write, research, and mentor because I believe leadership matters.

When leaders grow, people flourish. When people flourish, organizations become healthier. And when organizations become healthier, communities are strengthened.
